How to Open Your Pool in Spring

A practical Virginia spring opening sequence — cover off, water circulating, chemistry balanced, equipment checked.

Spring opening sets the tone for the whole season. Done carefully, you avoid weeks of cloudy water and equipment headaches.

1. Clear the cover and debris

Remove leaves and standing water from the cover before you fold or roll it back. Dumping a winter’s worth of debris into the pool makes everything harder.

2. Get water moving

Reconnect plumbing if it was winterized. Prime the pump. Start circulation. Do not add a pile of chemicals to stagnant water and hope.

3. Test before you dose

Check free chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and cyanuric acid. Adjust in steps. Shock only when the numbers and the water condition call for it.

4. Clean the filter

A dirty filter from last fall will not polish spring water. Clean or backwash until you are back to a normal pressure baseline.

5. Inspect the pad

Look for winter damage, loose fittings, animal nests, and error lights on heaters or automation. Address small leaks early.

Virginia pollen note

Yellow-green water in April is often pollen load as much as algae. Brush, filter, and maintain sanitizer. Do not assume you need to drain the pool on week one.

If the pump will not prime, the heater faults, or the water will not clear after balanced chemistry and a clean filter, schedule a spring open. Opening is easier when you are not alone with a mystery.
