Dealing with Pollen, Leaves, and Virginia Humidity
Local conditions that stress pool water — and the simple habits that keep up.
Virginia is beautiful and hard on pools in specific ways: heavy spring pollen, humid summers, and a long leaf season in the fall.
Pollen
In peak pollen weeks, water can look yellow-green even when chemistry is not far off. Skim, brush, empty baskets, and run filtration. Maintain sanitizer. An auto-cover during the worst pollen days is a real advantage.
Leaves and organic debris
Leaves add organics that consume chlorine and feed cloudiness. Skim before they sink. Empty skimmer baskets after windy days. Do not let a weekend of neglect become a Monday algae problem.
Humidity and storms
Warm, wet air and afternoon storms are normal. After a big rain, retest chemistry. Storm debris should be removed promptly. Watch filter pressure after heavy loads.
Habits that work
- Cover when you are not swimming during pollen and leaf peaks
- Test more often in high season
- Brush weekly even when the water looks fine
- Keep the filter honest — pressure rise means it is working and needs attention
Coastal humidity is not inland clay. Oak in Midlothian is not crepe myrtle at the Beach. The habit is the same. The calendar is not. See the weekly checklist or inquire about service.
