Seasonal Care Guide for Virginia Pools
Spring open, summer rhythm, fall close, and winter — a practical calendar for Virginia pools.
Virginia is not Florida and it is not Michigan. Our seasons are mild enough that many pools stay open longer, but pollen, humidity, leaf fall, and the occasional hard freeze still set the calendar. Here is how Tidewater Care thinks about the year.
Spring opening
Pull the cover, remove debris, and get water circulating. Test chemistry before you add a pile of product. Clean the filter. Inspect the equipment pad — look for winter damage, loose fittings, or animals that nested near the heater.
Virginia spring means pollen. If your pool turns yellow-green for a week every April, that is often pollen load plus a filter that is due for a clean — not necessarily a full algae bloom. Test, brush, filter, and do not panic on day one.
Summer rhythm
This is peak use and peak stress on the water. Heat, bather load, and afternoon storms push organics up. Stick to a weekly chemistry check (more often in July and August). Empty baskets. Watch the filter pressure. If you have a salt cell, inspect it mid-season for scale.
Run circulation long enough that the water turns over properly — especially after a pool party or a storm. Clear water in August is mostly consistency, not magic.
Fall close, or a longer season
Leaves are the work. Skim often. If you are closing for winter, do it in order: balance chemistry, clean the filter, set the water level for your cover type, winterize equipment, and secure the cover.
Many families keep the pool open later into fall because the weather allows it. If you do, stay on top of leaves and do not let chemistry slide just because swim season feels over.
Winter
Virginia winters are usually mild, but a hard freeze can still crack unprotected plumbing or damage equipment if water is not managed correctly. If the pool is closed, check the cover after storms. If it is open, maintain minimum circulation and chemistry so you do not start spring with a swamp.
A note on covers
An automatic cover changes the seasonal workload more than almost any other piece of equipment. Less debris, more stable chemistry, less heat loss. On an existing pool, we treat the cover as part of the Care stop — not a brochure extra.
