Heat Pumps and Virginia's Swim Season

In Virginia, a heat pump can add weeks of swimming in spring and fall. What heat pumps need, and how the inland and coastal calendars differ.

In Virginia, a heat pump can add weeks of swimming at both ends of the season, as long as someone keeps an eye on it.

What a heat pump needs

  • Good airflow and a clean coil
  • Reliable power
  • Water moving through it

Error codes are a reason to diagnose the problem, not to keep pressing reset. Condensation on a cool morning can look like a leak, so we check before assuming.

Spring and fall are when it matters

March can bring a warm Saturday and a freeze warning by Tuesday. November can feel gentle by the river and still drop hard at night. That's why heat pump use and freeze protection need to be planned together.

Inland and coastal calendars differ

Charlottesville, Albemarle and the Richmond area cool off earlier in fall. Hampton Roads holds its heat longer. The equipment is similar, but the calendar isn't, so we time your Care visits to your region.

If you're on Tidewater Care: Your technician checks the heat pump's airflow, coil, condensate and error codes on every visit. If it faults between visits, note the error code (a photo works) and send it to us before resetting.
